Do I Need an Inspection To Renew My Tags in Idaho?
No, an inspection is not required to renew your vehicle tags in Idaho. The state does not mandate safety inspections or emissions testing as a condition of registration renewal. In 2022, the Idaho Legislature passed a law repealing the state's vehicle emissions program requirement, effective July 1, 2023. Prior to this repeal, Ada County and Canyon County had required emissions testing for certain vehicles.
Idaho uses metal license plates with annual registration stickers. According to Idaho Code § 49-428, the annual registration sticker for the current registration year must be displayed on each license plate, except for trailers, semitrailers, and certain commercial vehicles. Registration stickers are affixed to the lower-right-hand corner of the license plate within the outlined rectangular area and indicate the month the vehicle registration expires.
